Project Hildegard #15 (2)

ave generosa – version “hurdy gurdy”

Six of the seven sections of this hymn to Maria begin with the interval of a fifth. Such a pronounced repetition is unusual in the chants that I’ve seen so far, and it gave me the idea to use a two-note drone to define the piece. And it sounds rather like a hurdy gurdy is playing (especially in the beginning), hence the title.

This one is actually played on the cello. However, it is an interesting fact that the hurdy gurdy and cello sound very good together – despite the difference in their ages – as I found out some years ago when performing with the composer Stevie Wishart.
