I confess that I was rooting for the Italian football team yesterday during the European Championship final. After all, they’d sung so well before their previous matches.
What went wrong? I think it was the tempo that threw them. It was just that little bit too quick for them. And once they got behind with their lyrics there was no more catching up. The singing was just not up to their usual standard – and, well, how could they save the match after that?
I would seriously recommend that the National Anthem before the next important match be sung at no more than crotchet (quarter note) = 112. That should work.
