Ut Sol

Ensemble Ut Sol was founded in 2003 by Jos Somsen and Penelope Turner. The group specializes in the study and performance of medieval vocal music using original notation, often in combination with modern or contemporary music.

Jos Somsen and Penelope Turner were founding members of the vocal ensemble Trigon, winner in 1998 of the International Young Artists’ Presentation (Festival of Flanders), Antwerp, Belgium.

In addition to giving concerts, Ut Sol holds workshops exploring the rich world of medieval music and encouraging improvisation.

Ut Sol’s Projects:

  • Hildegard von Bingen (1098 – 1179)
    • De expressieve en vernieuwende kracht van muziek: workshop and weekend retreat featuring the music and language of Hildegard von Bingen.
    • Winter: a concert experience with audience participation featuring the music of Hildegard von Bingen, Penelope Turner and Yiddish songs.
  • 12th and early 13th century polyphony from the Ecole de Notre Dame (Léonin and Pérotin) and Gregorian chant (as sung according to 13th century interpretation) – with the collaboration of Ildiko Hajnal and Guido Groenland:
    • Music for the Feast of the Holy Trinity
    • Eleanor of Aquitaine, 1122 – 1204 : The Life and Loves of a Medieval Queen
